Background of the Study
Career counseling plays a critical role in shaping students' academic and professional futures by guiding them toward suitable career paths based on their skills, interests, and academic performance. However, in many secondary schools, particularly in Sokoto South Local Government Area, career guidance services are either inadequate or completely absent. This gap leaves students without the necessary support to make informed decisions regarding their educational and career aspirations (Adebayo & Yusuf, 2023). The absence of structured career counseling programs in many secondary schools has resulted in students making uninformed career choices, often leading to academic struggles and mismatched professional aspirations (Okonkwo & Ibrahim, 2024).
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has proven to be a transformative tool in various domains, including education and career counseling. AI-based career counseling systems leverage machine learning and natural language processing (NLP) to assess students’ strengths, preferences, and academic backgrounds, providing personalized career recommendations (Olawale & Musa, 2023). Such systems analyze large volumes of student data, including subject performance, extracurricular activities, and personal interests, to generate career suggestions tailored to individual needs. In developed countries, AI-driven career counseling tools have been successfully implemented to bridge gaps in career guidance, providing students with real-time insights into suitable career paths (Adebayo & Salisu, 2023).
In Sokoto South, secondary school students face multiple challenges when making career choices. Many students have limited exposure to career options beyond traditional professions such as medicine, law, and engineering, often due to societal expectations and lack of access to comprehensive career information. Additionally, schools lack qualified career counselors who can provide personalized guidance. The absence of career counseling services contributes to students enrolling in courses that do not align with their skills and aspirations, leading to poor academic performance and dissatisfaction in higher education and future careers (Okonkwo & Musa, 2024).
Given these challenges, there is a need to develop an AI-based career counseling system tailored to the needs of secondary school students in Sokoto South. This system will analyze students' academic strengths, interests, and personality traits to provide customized career recommendations. By integrating AI into career counseling, students will receive personalized, data-driven guidance, improving their decision-making process and overall career satisfaction.
Statement of the Problem
Many secondary school students in Sokoto South struggle with making informed career choices due to the lack of structured career counseling services. Schools either lack dedicated career counselors or rely on teachers who may not have specialized training in career guidance. As a result, students often choose academic pathways based on societal expectations rather than their personal strengths and interests (Adebayo & Salisu, 2024).
Additionally, existing career counseling methods, where available, are limited in scope and rely on generic advice rather than personalized recommendations. The traditional approach does not consider critical factors such as students' academic performance trends, personality traits, and career market demands. This lack of personalized guidance results in students pursuing courses and careers that may not align with their abilities, leading to high dropout rates in tertiary institutions and dissatisfaction in the workforce (Okonkwo & Musa, 2024).
Despite advancements in AI technology, secondary schools in Sokoto South have yet to integrate AI-driven career guidance solutions. The absence of data-driven counseling tools means students are left to navigate career decisions on their own, often relying on misinformation or peer influence. Therefore, this study aims to develop an AI-based career counseling system that will provide personalized, accurate, and data-driven career recommendations for secondary school students, enabling them to make informed decisions about their academic and professional futures.
